Menstrual Migraines: An Holistic Approach
Menstrual migraines are more difficult than other types of migraines to treat, and are usually more painful. According to herbalist Phyllis Hogan, menstrual migraines can be caused by the body becoming too acidic and toxic. “To aid in removing this toxicity from the liver,” Hogan says, “consider using dandelion, yellowdock, burdock and wild yam.”
Women also need to keep their hormones in balance, Hogan says. “Taking raspberry leaf tea, red clover and vitex (chasteberry) are good herbs for striking that correct hormonal balance,” she insists.
It’s also wise, Hogan believes, to become aware of the cravings women get just before their period starts, and to try and resist consuming too much sugar, acidic, and cold foods during that time. Instead, she says, try eating more hormone-free proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
“Other ways to help menstrual migraines are to drink a lot of purified water, get plenty of sleep, and use lavender oil at the temples for tension,” she offers. “And never forget to take time for yourself in order to balance your mind, body, and spirit.”
